I’m not sure what time it is when I come awake, but I suspect we’re well-past midnight. The rain has stopped. The wind continues, however, and it moans across the empty prairie in a sound so lonesome my chest aches.
The lights are still off and the candles are out, and I’m not entirely sure what it was that woke me. I’ve turned on my side and shoved my butt into Silas Barton’s lap. His arm is draped over my waist, his muscular chest against my back, and I could easily get used to this.
There’s a creak out on the front porch. I tense at the sound, and Silas gives me a little squeeze. A moment later, there’s another. Something or someone is walking around out there.
“Sila—” I start, but he covers my mouth with his palm.
“Shh,” he whispers in my ear, his breath hot. “Stay here.”
And then he’s gone.
As stupid as it sounds, all I can think about is the curse.
I don’t want to lose Silas Barton to it.
I barely know him, but I want to know him better. I want to know him intimately. I want him to be safe, and there’s not much about this situation that seems safe.
More footsteps shuffle around on the porch, and under the wind, I swear, I hear whispers.
I swing my legs out of bed. My right ankle aches the moment I put weight on it, though it’s not as painful as I expected.
The bedroom doorway is a faint outline, and I shuffle over to it, praying I don’t knock into anything along the way. The hallway just beyond is a straight shot to the front door. I remember that much from when Silas brought me inside.
In the faint light, I can just make out my hero’s shape near the front door. There’s the soft click of a lock disengaging, and Silas yanks the knob, pulling it open.
Instantly, a beam of blinding white light shines in at him, turning him into a silhouette.
“Freeze!” a young man’s voice barks. “Sheriff’s department!”
“Hands behind your head, Barton,” another snaps.
“Y’all couldn’t just knock?” Silas deadpans.
“Hands!” the second officer yells again.
Silas slowly lifts his hands and puts them behind his head. “I think you boys better explain what you’re doing here.”
“You’re not the one giving orders here,” the first one says, shoving his way inside.
Silas steps into his path, his body rigid. “Whoa, there. Where do you think you’re going, officer?”
“You need to step back, sir,” the deputy says, his voice a little shaky, which makes sense as Silas has at least six inches and sixty pounds on him. The officer lays his hand on his waistband by his gun. Good Lord, he’s a young ’un. Even in the faint reflected light afforded by his flashlight, I can tell he’s a few years younger than me. This could go so badly so fast.
“Where’s Sheriff Brown?” Silas asks.
“That ain’t none of your damn business,” the second officer pipes in.
“Is she in there?” a woman’s strained voice calls from a distance.
